The Riverhead Town Police Department issued 747 summonses during the recent “Buckle Up New York – Click It or Ticket” campaign, police announced in a press release last night.

In four checkpoints around town from May 19 to June 1, Riverhead Police issued 175 summonses for seat belt violations, 17 for child restraint violations, 72 for cell phone violations and 470 for other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations, such as unlicensed operator, operating a motor vehicle with a revoked/suspended license, uninspected vehicles, cracked windshields and unregistered vehicles.

In directed enforcement patrol during the same two-week period, police issued an additional 11 summonses for seat belt violations and two for other V&T violations, police said.

One of the checkpoints was a nighttime enforcement conducted on Roanoke Avenue near First Street after 4 p.m. and is considered a nighttime enforcement.  The other three checkpoints were held during daytime and were located on Route 105 near Route 25 (twice) and on the Long Island Expressway exit 73 entrance ramp

The two-week seat belt enforcement was part of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee’s “Buckle Up New York – Click it or Ticket” statewide campaign.

The Riverhead Town Police Department said it will also participate in other campaigns sponsored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee throughout the summer months, including a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program known as STEP, which targets aggressive driving violators.

Aggressive driving violations include failure to yield the right of way, following too closely (tailgating), unsafe lane changing, unsafe passing, failure to signal, stop sign violations and disregarding traffic control devices such as red lights.  Officers will also enforce violators who fail to properly stop before making a right on a red light signal.

Riverhead Police will also participate in “Speed Week,” also sponsored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, which will take place during the month of August, the press release said. Police will target areas in town where speeding is known to be “a major issue,” according to the release.
